What is a ‘number sentence’?

When we talk to our children it is very important that we speak the same language - and it’s the same for maths. It helps when you understand the correct terminology that your children are learning at school.

Our children and their teachers speak about ‘number sentences’. It is not some weird number word thing but just simply the generic name for an arrangement of numbers, letters and symbols to demonstrate a mathematical equation.

The simplest ones will be:

2 + 3 = 5

An example of a more complicated number sentences is:

x3 - 3x = 5y + (y – 4)

If they involve an arrangement of numbers, letters and symbols then they will always be a NUMBER SENTENCE.
