The NEW NATIONAL CURRICULUM was introduced in 2013 and that changed the method by which we teach the early stages of ADDITION and SUBTRACTION in schools.  

The formal ‘columnar’ method for addition and subtraction, that we as parents understand, isn’t introduced until Year 3.  This booklet describes the steps and options to getting there that our children will explore from Reception to Year 3. 

Your job as a parent is to understand the different options, support your child’s choice and offer guidance and alternatives if they get ‘lost’.  Please don’t force the only method you know on them before they are ready - you must take a back seat and enjoy the journey!
